New Study Details Children's Media Use

Media use is central in the lives of very young children, and a recently released study by the Kaiser Family Foundation substantiates this finding. Based on a national survey of parents of children six months to six years, the study found that parents used electronic media to "manage busy schedules, keep the peace, and facilitate family routines such as eating, relaxing, and falling asleep." More than eight in ten children used media in a typical day, watching an average of two hours a day.

Educational media received a big vote of confidence from parents who felt their children learned positive behaviors and skills. One in three children had a TV in their bedroom, with parents most commonly saying they wanted to free up TVs in other parts of the house for their own use. In this age of media dominance, the National Institute on Media and the Family urges all parents to be MediaWise. Healthy media habits leads to healthy kids.
